The ballets performed by flocks of birds in the sky are a fascinating sight; with neither choreographer nor conductor, individuals come together to form a single being, guided by an extraordinary collective intelligence.

This phenomenon inspired the light installation SWARM (colony). The basic components form an ascending vortex which seems to erupt from the ground on Place du Molard before streaming upwards into the cosmos. As if frozen in time, the flock is brought to life by the light dancing around it. The twelve-meter-high steel skeleton of this installation and its wooden skin move around in an incandescent waltz.

By a process of bio-mimicry, SWARM explores our individual relationship to a group and to the organisational structures of our society. ‘I have always been fascinated by the physical phenomena that can be observed in nature.

At a time when humanity is facing a host of new challenges, I believe that these forms of self-organisation should serve as an inspiration to us all.
